Pies?

I've just had online discussion with [info]mnesarete  about what our grandmothers are cooking, and came to think: what about pies? She didn't mention any. My grandmother always cooked pies, and there were big pies (pirogi) and little pies (pirozhki). She made piroshki with meat, or with rice and eggs, or with apples, or sometimes with raisins. My favourite ones were with apples, yum! And she was making sometimes big pirog - big pie, with either cabbage and eggs, or with jam. I liked the one with jam and with web of pastry on top.

It's a thing in Russian culture that grandmothers are always depicted traditionally as making pies.
I dunno how those deal with it who can't make pies...
Do Kiwi grandmothers make pies? And if they do - what do they stuff them with?

More StW thoughts

After couple of days of Diatribe madness, msn madness, pm madness, and all such stuff, I have more thoughts on the game.

One - I can see we are gonna have lotsa rules improvement, mostly in terms of clarifying. Next game they say will be in May, so apparently a new shiny rulesbook will be made.

Two - Zahira shouldn't have died, from the technical side looks like it was nothing at all like a finishing blow. I've been finished few times in larps, and it was always clearly felt as such, the draw, not the tap. Not to mention the baby situation was really weird, and what happened was exactly as in previous weekend game. Babies are a bloody trouble - but they are also a silent trouble *sigh*. This is just sad. Currently still trying to comfort theotherphoenix.

Three - some powers and abilities need more detailed explanations, and from current Diatribe discussions it's rather obvious which ones. I hope we are gonna have more discussions on it, and not like "this is the rules book, read it", but to discuss abilities on the forum. I think it's now up to us players (NPCs too!) to invest some time into learning more on this, so that next time we know how things should happen, and can also help the newbies. I personally had a few moments of rules clarification during the game by other players, and it was all helpful for me. In whole - just reading is not good, discussion is good. That's one of the things I even remember from my psych background, so I'm planning to make some discussions later, when the forum calms down a bit. I'm sure people wouldn't mind. It would be easier to remember rules like that too.

Four - after clarification just given to me on the forum by one of the NPCs I start understanding why my character survived. It is not because of some misunderstanding, as I thought (and felt guilty because of it:-((((). It is because I've had such awesome fellow Order members caring about me and protecting me. Thank you so much guys. I'll do my best to use the life you saved for me to kick Lord M's ass for the Lord.

Frankly speaking, the game was really awesome for me, but I know there were many bitter moments for others, so I again feel kinda bad yaying about "cool-cool-cool!" because, again, I survived. Dunno what I will be doing when Adara dies, but I got to play her at least in one more game, so I'm all glad with that.

Gangsters

Arrgh, I can't get them out of my head now! And I so want pics from Hindenbuuuuuuurg...
I asked on Diatribe if anyone is planning to run a gangster larp. I'm sure now there will be lotsa people interested in playing it, but question is - whether anyone would wanna organise it.
I googled Al Capone! Funny enough, he was a pretty a charming guy, not at all scary-bad-gangster-looking. Now I'm wondering, they show gangsters as neat gentlemen with good manners in the movies, how close is it to reality?
And I googled "moll", "gangster moll", and "gun moll" (cheers [info]allova:-)))))
I actually didn't know the word moll before this game.
Madness keeps progressing.

From other news: this morning, being upset, worried, and kinda depressed, I bought a Mars chocolate, one of those that say "1 of 6 bars wins free bar!" Guess what? I won a free bar:-) Now need to find where it is I can get it.

I need a pancake advise please

I'm making pancakes, and they are very thin, not nicely puffy as usual, and they are softish and hard to turn over, and they mostly tear when turned. Also, they are more flexible than usual, so it's very hard to pick them up.

I used plain flour today instead of high grade. Is that the reason? Because if it is, I'll simply not use it for pancakes any more, but if it's not then what can it be?

Glasses and no glasses

I noticed this thing about glasses: they seem to have become a normal part of my face. I've been wearing them for ages, all the time. But sometimes I was taking them off when had a photo taken of me, and also sometimes now I'm wearing contacts. I look so much different! And everybody keep telling me that too.

The face without glasses is very different from what I'm used to see in the mirror. When I look in the mirror closely with no glasses, I recognize it ok, as I often do it to take a lash out or put make-up on. But from a distance it looks like I'm so very different. I just don't recognize myself. Looks like the face is terribly missing something that should be there.

However, on the photos it's different every time. Sometimes I see clearly it's me, sometimes looks not like me at all.

what's wrong?

Teen pregnancy

Just got to know from IT Guru about this case, oh dear. Well, Chicago Tribune says there was no pact, who knows.

I think teen pregnancy is bad, and children should be educated about contraception stuff and other necessary things like that. Including something about how to take care of the baby. Talking to friends who have children, I start thinking the whole baby thing is much more hard than any childless person can ever imagine. Also, I like the phrase I saw in childfree community "I don't want children because child is the only thing in the world that you can never abandon. You can move to live separate from the parents who annoy you, you can change the job you don't like, you can divorce the husband you don't love any more, but you can't get rid of your child".

It was actually a Russian community, so people there feel a lot of pressure from families and friends, since Russian culture assumes every woman must give birth, and if she doesn't then something is wrong with her and she will never be happy.

But I wonder if those 17 girls were thinking the same. Articles say they were more happy to find they were pregnant rather than not. I think American culture is also very children-oriented, but is there an actual pressure to have children that people might believe that much?

There is always first time

... so I decided it might be time for some cauliflower.
My Dad likes it very much, so maybe I have genetic inclination to it?
Never cooked it before (the pre-frozen stuff doesn't count), and it's always there, in the organic store. So I thought, maybe buy a bit and try it. Tomorrow, with fresh head, will be googling in two languages to see cooking suggestions. Though I might start with just boiling it.

Meat question

Very curious: what meat you Kiwis eat, how you cook it, and with what?
Yeah, me very trying to become a Kiwi. But I still cook using Soviet recepies;-)))
Like, chicken is roasted, and served with rice. Beef is often made into potato soup. Lamb is stewed, and better served with vegges and rice. Pork may be roasted or fried, and good with rice too.
But I'm actually looking into integrating more vegges into my diet, so which of them go well with what meat? Looks like we were eating a lot of rice, but I'm really sick of it by now. Optional vegges are potatos and cabbacge, but carrots and cauliflower could be used too, I guess. And capsicum, oh yes, I get more used to it now.

Wench squee

Costume making is going well. Looks like it'll be the first game for which I'll have everything sewed in time. One chemise is fully ready, and I need to make two others like that. Skirt half made, and it pleats very nicely. Petticoat isn't started yet, but coming.

This weekend was mostly devoted to corset bodice making. I finally found a perfect way to make eyelets. And padded the bodice with two layers of wool, it feels warm, which, from experience of the last game, is something to consider carefully. I hope I'll be ok at night.

Now what I have left to do is to adjust and join straps over shoulders, and then trim the edges all around, with the same red linen that covers the bodice. I've put it on with chemise and skirt today, and I'm happy with my look. But it needs to be laced carefully not to crush the chest (meh, still hurts). Also, the drawstring of chemise needs to be tighter to lessen the neckline. I've made a happy chemise with totally adjustable neckline. However, what I've tried on today would be suitable for NAAMA, those people have seen even worse, but for the game I need to look more decent, because I certainly deserve penance just for that cleavage by itself (if you wanna get the idea - look at my avatar)

On accessories: planning to make a white linen cap, and a pouch or two, and also stake bag, and will need to find a way to carry the sword in more convenient way (that is always a big problem for me...)

Bed time! Have work tomorrow.

Another English language question

What is bodyshot? I saw it in a Facebook application, and didn't find the word in my disctionnary. Does it have something to do with photography (I know that the word "shoot" is used there), or is it about the actual shooting of the body? O.O In fact, it will only become a "body" after it's shot...
